Local College Football Product Leaves Undefeated Team Over NIL

Matthew Sluka is taking his ball and going home -- or to be more accurate, wherever he can make the most money.

Sluka was the starting quarterback for the UNLV Rebels, leading them to an undefeated start to the season after transferring in from Holy Cross. His tenure out in Las Vegas will end after just three games, however, as he announced on social media Tuesday that he will not play in any more games this season.

"I committed to UNLV based on certain representations that were made to me, which were not upheld after I enrolled," Sluka posted on X. "Despite discussions, it became clear that these commitments would not be fulfilled in the future. I wish my teammates the best of luck this season and hope for the continued success of the program."

Carl Reed Jr. of CBS Sports pushed back on the quarterback's accounting of events, reporting that all financial commitments from UNLV were completely met. Sluka and his family, however, hired an agent after wins against Kansas and Houston and collectively feel that his market value increased.

Sluka -- who might be familiar to local football fans -- decided to transfer to UNLV after an outstanding career at Holy Cross, where he is first in career pass efficiency (147.4), second in career rushing yards (3,583), second in career rushing touchdowns (38), fifth in career passing yards (5,916) and fifth in career passing touchdowns (59).

The fifth-year senior completed 21-of-48 passes for 318 yards, six touchdowns and one interception for the Rebels (3-0) this season, adding 286 yards and a touchdown on the ground.

Arizona State appears to be a popular landing spot for Sluka, according to prognosticators.
