Jerod Mayo has made a bad habit of going back on his word in his first season as Patriots head coach.
The trend continued when Mayo caused unnecessary confusion even before the Patriots took their first snap against the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday. The first-year head coach announced that Antonio Gibson would start over Rhamondre Stevenson; however, when New England took the field, Stevenson, not Gibson, received the ball.
When questioned after the Chargers absolutely thrashed the Patriots why the change was made, Mayo simply called it a “coach’s decision.”
Mayo doubled down on the baffling decision when he was asked if there was more information regarding the decision.
“No, there’s really no intel. I’m just going to stick with coach’s decision on that,” Mayo told reporters on Monday, per team-provided transcript.

Did Mayo truly change his mind in the last second, or was he channeling his predecessor, Patriots legend Bill Belichick? The former was notorious for being vague about his players, but never to this degree. Moreover, Mayo’s misinformation wasn’t exactly a game-changer for either team.
