Pete Alonso is one of the more interesting free-agent players remaining on the market. The Boston Red Sox could find their way into this scenario.

USA Today’s Bob Nightengale recently linked the Red Sox to the first baseman who’s spent his entire career with the New York Mets. A pure right-handed slugger would fill a need for Boston given offseason priorities. Alonso’s positional outlook, however, also makes for a weird fit given the Red Sox’s current roster construction.

Boston’s had multiple rumors swirl about the addition of a right-handed corner infielder all winter, though signing Alonso would also spark a chain reaction and moves around the order.

Should the ballclub make the splash to sign the slugger, here are the two most likely lineup scenarios Boston would have to choose between.

Option 1
LF Jarren Duran
3B Rafael Devers
DH Pete Alonso
1B Triston Casas
SS Trevor Story
RF Wilyer Abreu
2B Kristian Campbell
C Connor Wong
CF Ceddanne Rafaela

DH Masataka Yoshida

Alonso would feast with the Green Monster as a target and add the needed right-handed balance and power the Red Sox seek for the lineup. The question becomes if the positional consequences and hefty contract fit into the future plans of the order.
