The Boston Bruins suffered a tough 3-1 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes on Monday night. Things didn’t get any better for the team on Tuesday either, as the team was dealt some tough news regarding former first-round pick John Beecher.

As part of the front office’s roster shuffling on Monday, Beecher was placed on waivers by the Bruins. The hope was that he would clear waivers, which would allow the team to send him to their AHL affiliate, the Providence Bruins.

The Calgary Flames had other plans, unfortunately. After placing a claim on Beecher, they ended up being awarded him on Tuesday, meaning that Boston’s depth at the center position has taken another hit.

“Calgary claims Beecher,” NHL insider Elliotte Friedman shared in a post on X.

Over three seasons with the B’s, Beecher racked up 11 goals and 11 assists apiece. While he played in 78 games last season, he struggled to carve out a consistent role this year for new head coach Marco Sturm, as he took the ice just six times, scoring one goal in that time.

Boston obviously knew that it was possible it would lose Beecher by placing him on waivers, but that’s a risk the front office opted to take. With Elias Lindholm closing in on a return from a lower body injury, though, it was likely a decision the team was going to have make in the near future anyway.

The Bruins will now embark on a trip out west after their loss to the Canes. The team will be back in action on Wednesday night for a matchup with the Anaheim Ducks. Puck drop is scheduled for 10 p.m. ET.
