The Boston Red Sox reportedly made another trade for a starting pitcher.

Boston already acquired Sonny Gray to bolster the rotation, and on Thursday, the Red Sox acquired right-handed starter Johan Oviedo from the Pittsburgh Pirates in a multi-player deal. ESPN’s Jeff Passan was the first to report the news.

The Red Sox are acquiring Oviedo, left-handed pitcher Tyler Samaniego, and catcher Adonys Guzman from the Pirates for outfielder Jhostynxon Garcia and right-handed pitcher Jesus Travieso, according to Robert Murray.

Oviedo, 27, dealt with injuries last season as he was limited to just nine starts, going 2-1 with a 3.57 ERA. He projects to be a bottom-of-the-rotation arm who’s a career 15-26 with a 4.24 ERA in 81 games, including 67 starts.

Samaniego, meanwhile, is a relief pitcher who reached AA last season. The 26-year-old went 3-3 with a 3.99 ERA over four levels of minor league baseball last season.

The final player the Red Sox acquired is Guzman. The 22-year-old catcher was selected in the fifth round of the 2025 MLB Draft by Pittsburgh. He appeared in one game in A, going 2-for-5 with a home run and two RBIs.

In return, the Red Sox did have to part ways with Garcia, who’s the team’s third-ranked prospect. The 22-year-old reached the majors this past season, appearing in five games, recording one hit and two walks.

The Red Sox signed Garcia as an International Free Agent in 2019.

Travieso split last season between Rookie Ball and A, going 3-3 with a 3.06 ERA in 19 games, including 16 starts.

Oviedo is the key part of the return for the Red Sox, who will join a rotation that will feature Garrett Crochet, Brayan Bello, Gray, Partrick Sandoval, and Kutter Crawford.
