The Boston Red Sox kept reinforcing their pitching staff by acquiring Johan Oviedo from the Pittsburgh Pirates. One analyst praised Boston’s latest move.
Former first baseman Yonder Alonso called the trade a “win-win” for both teams on MLB Network’s “Hot Stove.” While the 2017 All-Star likes Pittsburgh attaining outfielder Jhostynxon García in the five-player deal, the analyst gushed over Oviedo’s potential.
“He’s got great personality. He’s got great character,” Alonso said of Oviedo. “He’s gonna work hard; he’s been working down in Miami with Aroldis Chapman already, as it is. So, I think it’s great.”
Alonso claimed that Oviedo had the makings of a worthy No. 2 starter in Pittsburgh behind Paul Skenes before missing the entire 2024 season due to Tommy John surgery. He posted a 3.57 ERA in nine starts after returning this August.
“I like this deal for Boston,” Alonso said. “I think they get that right-hander. They get that swing-and-miss guy. He’s got a really good slider, good changeup. He’s not scared either. He’s gonna go right after you. He’s gonna pitch inside. He’s gonna move you off your feet. I really like this move for Boston.”

Alonso believes that Oviedo has the stuff and makeup to slide into Boston’s rotation as a worthy No. 4 starter. He thinks the 6-foot-6 hurler will blossom into a prolific power pitcher with a full season to mature.
“He has a presence on the mound,” Alonso said. “Big dude, but he’s got ‘that.’ Swing-and-miss stuff, nasty sliders, top-of-the-zone fastball, 96-98 miles an hour. When he’s healthy, which he is right now, this guy’s gonna be a weapon.”
