MLB’s Winter Meetings commenced on Sunday, which has fans bracing themselves for big moves. For Boston Red Sox fans, Alex Bregman’s fate is what’s at the forefront of their minds. While it’s been widely surmised by pundits that the Red Sox are the clear front-runners to sign/re-unite with Bregman, he’s not without other eager suitors.

The Detroit Tigers have reportedly been eyeing Bregman since last offseason, and possibly longer. The Chicago Cubs are reportedly also interested, as are (gasp) the Toronto Blue Jays.

On Sunday, USA Today’s MLB insider Bob Nightengale provided some Cubs talk in connection to Bregman.

“(Bregman) won’t get the $40 million a year he walked away from, but will have the same teams interested in his services as a year ago: Boston, Detroit and the Chicago Cubs,” Nightengale wrote. “Yet, the Tigers and Cubs proved they can win without him, while the Cubs found out that rookie Matt Shaw is certainly capable of being an everyday third baseman. If the Cubs sign Bregman, they could shift Shaw to second base.”

The Cubs are thought to have little to zero interest in retaining Kyle Tucker, which positions Bregman as a bat that could ostensibly help replace Tucker’s production in Chicago’s lineup.

Bregman joined the Red Sox in February after spending his entire career up until that point with the Houston Astros. A right quad strain sidelined him for seven weeks from late May, limiting him to 114 games in 2025.

Despite the injury, Bregman posted a strong .273/.360/.462 slash line last season, with 18 home runs, 28 doubles, 62 RBI, and a 128 OPS+. His elite plate discipline and Gold Glove-caliber defense at third base helped Boston reach the playoffs. Following the season, Bregman opted out of his contract in November, entering free agency once again.
