It appears that Pete Alonso is no longer a member of the New York Mets. According to multiple sources, Alonso is finalizing a five-year, $155 million contract with the Baltimore Orioles.
The Mets have now lost Alonso to the Orioles and closer Edwin Díaz to the Los Angeles Dodgers in 48 hours.
On November 24, the Mets traded second baseman Brandon Nimmo to the Texas Rangers for Marcus Semien. New York also signed former New York Yankees and Milwaukee Brewers closer Devin Williams to a three-year, $51 million deal on December 3.
Taken all together, the Mets’ offseason is being branded as a failure by pretty much their entire fan base.

According to new intel from The Boston’s Globe‘s Tim Healey, the Mets are considering adding free agent first baseman Paul Goldschmidt as a way to help replace Alonso.
Goldschmidt’s 2025 campaign with the New York Yankees was surprisingly successful, given his age. Signed as a free agent in the offseason, the 37-year-old first baseman ignited optimism with a scorching April, batting .383 over his first dozen games and delivering timely doubles.

Goldschmidt ultimately settled into a .274 average across 146 outings, featuring 31 doubles (19th in the AL) 10 home runs, 45 RBI, yielding a .731 OPS and 1.2 WAR.
It’s unclear how much gas he has left in the tank, but Goldschmidt has etched quite a career resumé. Drafted by Arizona in 2009, he debuted in 2011, then thrived with St. Louis from 2019-2024 before his one-year Yankees stint. His ledger boasts a .288 average, 372 homers, 1,232 RBI, eight All-Star nods, a 2022 NL MVP, four Gold Gloves, and five Silver Sluggers.
Goldschmidt isn’t a signing that would make Mets fans suddenly cured of their anger, but there’s no reason not to add him, as he’ll likely come on a cheap deal.
