It’s back to the drawing board for Boston Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow.
This week at the MLB Winter Meetings, he saw two of the team’s top free-agent options come off the board. Phillies designated hitter Kyle Schwarber re-signed with Philadelphia on a five-year, $150 million deal. Then former New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso signed a five-year, $155 million contract with the Baltimore Orioles.
So now what?
“Eugenio Suarez is yet another infielder the Red Sox are showing interest in. Also: (Alex) Bregman, (Bo) Bichette, (Kazuma) Okamoto, (Jorge) Polanco, (Ketel) Marte,” the New York Post’s Jon Heyman reports.
“A reunion with Alex Bregman figures to be the main objective at this point, but the Red Sox could also target free agent Eugenio Suarez, who clubbed 49 homers in 159 games last season,” The Athletic’s Jen McCaffrey reports.

Suarez is a popular name these days. The 34-year-old is a two-time All-Star. His 49 home runs last season (which ranked fifth in the majors) tied his career high and Suarez set a new personal best with 118 RBIs.
“At the trade deadline, the Red Sox pursued a trade for Suarez, a league source said, with the intent of having him play first base. The Red Sox are also exploring the trade market with interest in Houston’s Isaac Paredes and Arizona’s Ketel Marte,” McCaffrey adds.
Paredes and Marte are intriguing options. The 26-year-old Paredes is a two-time All-Star and has hit at least 20 home runs in three of his six big-league seasons.

Marte is a three-time All-Star and two-time Silver Slugger Award winner. The 32-year-old has hit at least 25 home runs in each of the last three seasons.
“My guess is they have one more significant FA signing and one more significant trade in them,” Masslive.com’s Chris Cotillo reports. “I believe the two biggest moves they make from here on out are for hitters. But Breslow is pitching-obsessed and doesn’t close doors there.”
Of course, the Red Sox have already made some progress on the pitching front, trading for St. Louis Cardinals right-hander Sonny Gray and Pittsburgh Pirates reliever Johan Oviedo.

So what now? All eyes will be on Breslow to see what he has up his sleeve.
