The Boston Red Sox got off to a busy start this offseason, but things have quieted down as of late, as the team’s progress has stalled in free agency. Despite that, the team has continued to be linked to just about every big name available, whether it be through free agency or the trade market.
Based on how things have unfolded so far, it seems like the front office is more open to making trades than handing out big-money deals in free agency. Should Boston make another trade, the San Diego Padres could be a realistic partner.
Recent reports have indicated that the Padres are fielding trade offers for several of their players, including star relief pitchers Mason Miller and Adrian Morejon. While the Sox have already strengthened their starting rotation, their bullpen could still use some help.
Miller is one of the most electrifying relief pitchers in the majors. After a bit of a slow start with the Athletics last season, Miller posted a 0.77 ERA in 22 outings for the Padres after getting acquired by the Padres ahead of the trade deadline. With Aroldis Chapman manning the closer spot, Miller could be the perfect setup man for him.
If there’s a guy who is a better fit for Boston, though, it’s Morejon. A star left-handed reliever who made it to his first All-Star Game last season, Morejon posted a sparkling 2.08 ERA over 75 outings for San Diego last season.

Acquiring one of these guys would cost quite a bit, so you only have to imagine what that price tag would look like for both of them. The Red Sox have the assets to acquire these two stars, though, and they could effectively shore up their bullpen with one trade.
While Morejon would likely need a new contract after being acquired, Miller is under team control through the 2029 season, which would only make him more valuable. With these guys on board, the Red Sox could feature the best bullpen in the majors.
Just because San Diego is listening for trade offers on these guys does not mean they are going to trade them. With the Sox struggling to sign free agents, though, it could make sense for them to return to the trade market and make a heavy push to bring both Miller and Morejon to Boston.
