The Boston Red Sox have had more success on the trade market this offseason than in free agency, and it looks like a big blockbuster trade between the New York Mets and San Diego Padres may be in the works that could have some big repercussions for the Sox.
Reports have emerged indicating that the Padres are listening to trade offers for several key players, with that group being headlined by guys like pitchers Nick Pivetta and Mason Miller, and outfielder Ramon Laureano. New York is rumored to be making an aggressive push to swing a deal that would shake up the landscape of the league.
Given how active Boston has been on the trade market early this offseason, any news involving a potential trade impacts them. Perhaps the most important development for the team is that a new potential trade partner has emerged, as guys like Miller and fellow relief pitcher Adrian Morejon could help fill in the Red Sox’s bullpen.
At the same time, the Sox are witnessing teams across the league get more aggressive after the first few dominoes have fallen in free agency. The Mets have been hit hard early, as they have watched Pete Alonso, Edwin Diaz and Tyler Rogers find new homes over the past week or so.
The Red Sox have done well to add some new faces, such as Sonny Gray and Johan Oviedo, to their starting rotation, but it’s becoming clear that they need to operate with a greater sense of urgency, because if they don’t, they could miss out on their top targets.

It goes without saying that Boston is in a great spot one way or another, but if this team wants to contend for a World Series in 2026, it’s going to need to make a couple of big moves this offseason. And while the Mets have emerged as a top trade partner for the Padres, the Sox could swoop in and make another big deal from out of nowhere.
