The Boston Red Sox have been active on the trade market this winter, swinging multiple trades for pitchers in the past several weeks. After missing out on top free-agent sluggers Pete Alonso and Kyle Schwarber, they’ll likely pivot to trading for a big bat or two instead (on top of trying to re-sign Alex Bregman).
The Red Sox have been connected to numerous big names in trade rumors lately, including Ketel Marte, Isaac Paredes and Willson Contreras, among others. They appear to be exploring many different ways to improve their lineup.
On Tuesday, MassLive’s Chris Cotillo joined MLB Network to discuss Boston’s rumored trade targets.
“They have been in, over the last week, trade talks for Paredes in Houston, (Brendan) Donovan and Contreras in St. Louis, Marte in Arizona, to a lesser extent (Corey) Seager,” Cotillo said. “They’re aiming for these big-time position players…There are a lot of guys that still could be had.”

While Cotillo said the Red Sox are pursuing many different options right now, he believes Marte makes the most sense for them. He also acknowledged that acquiring Marte would require sending considerable talent to the Diamondbacks.
“I think Marte is kind of the perfect fit for them in terms of the closest thing to a complete player,” Cotillo said. “With that being said, it’s gonna take a lot. I think it has to start with at least one pretty good Major League-ready starter…It’s gonna have to hurt.”
Cotillo added that other teams are also in on Marte and that Arizona is in no rush to trade him, as he still has five years left on his team-friendly extension.

WEEI’s Rob Bradford reported earlier on Tuesday that there’s “nothing close” regarding a Boston trade for Marte, so a major move by the Red Sox doesn’t appear imminent. There’s still plenty of time left in the offseason for that to change, however.
