The Boston Red Sox have been busy this offseason, upgrading their rotation through trades for Sonny Gray and Johan Oviedo.

However, they have yet to find the impact bats they are looking for. They are still trying to re-sign Alex Bregman and struck out at last week’s Winter Meetings, missing out on Pete Alonso and Kyle Schwarber.

While they’ve been very active in the trade market, the Red Sox have yet to sign an MLB free agent this offseason as of Tuesday night. They are the only American League team that hasn’t done so yet and one of just two teams along with the Colorado Rockies.

That said, it’s still early in the offseason. Spring training is two months away, so Boston still has plenty of time to add to its roster.

The Red Sox tend to be patient, anyway, which has worked for them in the past. Some of their biggest recent free-agent signings happened later in the winter, including Trevor Story, J.D. Martinez and Bregman.

In the meantime, Boston appears to be working on bringing Bregman back. The Red Sox have also been linked to numerous stars in trades and free agency, including Bo Bichette, Ketel Marte, Isaac Paredes, Chris Martin and others.

Boston still has plenty of options and a number of different directions it can go. Now it’s up to Craig Breslow to figure out which paths make the most sense for improving the roster, be it trades, free agency or both.
