The Boston Red Sox have made a few trades this offseason, but fans are still awaiting their first big splash in free agency.
Trades to land Sonny Gray and Johan Oviedo are great for the Red Sox, but the team still needs to address the offense. As of right now, Alex Bregman is a free agent, and he would be a key loss. However, the Red Sox are reportedly still interested in him.
Bregman would be a solid fit for many teams. According to MLB insider Bob Nightengale, the Arizona Diamondbacks have entered the race for him. However, they are not the only team going after the three-time All-Star. The top of the free agent market has stalled, but ESPN’s David Schoenfield predicted on Wednesday that Bregman would ultimately re-sign with the Red Sox.
“In the end, a return to Boston still makes the most sense,” wrote Schoenfield. “The Red Sox went after Schwarber and Alonso, and they need Bregman’s right-handed bat to help balance out the lefty-heavy lineup.”
It is no surprise the Red Sox want Bregman back. He had his best season since 2019 in their uniform and was a great leader in their clubhouse. Craig Breslow spoke on the impact he had earlier this offseason.

“We had the chance to see up close what Alex can bring to a clubhouse, and what he can bring to the field,” Craig Breslow said on MLB Network on Dec. 10. “He emerged as a leader, especially among those young players. His impact on our team was huge. We obviously remain engaged in conversations, but how things will go, we’re not sure.”
The longer his free agency drags out, the more teams he could attract. As other free agents sign, Bregman becomes an even better option for teams. He slashed .273/.360/.462 in 114 games last season and hit 18 home runs for the Red Sox.
He will turn 32 next season, and teams could view his age as a concern when considering paying him. However, the Red Sox saw the difference he can make in their clubhouse last season, so they remain a strong contender to sign him.
