Team USA’s World Baseball Classic roster scored two massive additions on Thursday.
Detroit Tigers ace Tarik Skubal and San Diego Padres relief pitcher Mason Miller each committed to pitch for the United States in the WBC. The announcements occur as each remains the talk of trade speculation.
Skubal won his second straight American League Cy Young Award after posting a 2.21 ERA, 0.91 WHIP and 241 strikeouts in 2025. While the southpaw has developed into the game’s most lethal hurler, he’s also the center of trade chatter entering his final season under contract.

While it may seem like the Tigers are merely testing the market in case someone makes an outrageous offer, ESPN’s Jorge Castillo called a Skubal trade “likely” last week. The Boston Red Sox would pose a threat to pair the 29-year-old with Garrett Crochet considering their bevvy of young talent and desire to land another high-end starter.
Miller established himself as one of MLB’s most dangerous late-inning options when moving to the bullpen in 2024. Armed with a triple-digit heater and wipeout slider, his 43.1 strikeout percentage leads all relievers over the last two seasons.
The Athletics traded Miller to the San Diego Padres in July, but the 27-year-old could potentially be on the move again. San Diego is reportedly considering trade offers for Miller and other members of a stacked bullpen after a Wild Card Series playoff exit.

While the Red Sox already have an elite left-handed closer in Aroldis Chapman, Miller would provide more long-term stability and the option of shifting back into the rotation.
Skubal gives Team USA a lethal one-two rotation punch alongside NL Cy Young Award winner Paul Skenes. Meanwhile, Miller joins a WBC bullpen also featuring Red Sox setup man Garrett Whitlock.
