After a hectic start to the offseason, things have gone quiet for the Boston Red Sox. With the team appearing to be on the verge of emerging as a World Series contender, the Sox are looking to put the finishing touches on their mini-rebuild that took place in the wake of the team’s decision to trade Mookie Betts to the Los Angeles Dodgers back in 2020.

With Betts due for a new deal in the near future, the Red Sox opted to trade him to the Dodgers in exchange for a haul of prospects. Considering how Betts has gone on to help L.A. win three World Series titles since this trade, though, it’s safe to say this deal has blown up in Boston’s face.

The good news for the Sox is that they are close to reestablishing themselves as a true championship threat once again. When discussing the trade, though, Betts admitted on a livestream with popular streamer Adin Ross that he was confused by the decision, although he understood the business side of the move.

“I knew. They told me,” Betts said of the Red Sox’s decision to trade him. “It was weird, because I was like, ‘Why?’ … I didn’t want to leave, but I understand the business side of it. It all worked out.”

There’s no doubt that Boston made a mistake trading away Betts, but you can’t win every trade. The Red Sox’s front office has done a good job building its farm system back up since his departure, and the team began to reap the rewards of the work in that department last season.

Now, the Sox are looking to put together an aggressive body of work to help the rising crop of prospects that are making their way to the majors. To this point, not much has been done, but it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Boston make a big move or two in the coming weeks.
