The Boston Red Sox might need to find a new answer against left-handed pitching…

The Seattle Mariners came to an agreement with outfielder Rob Refsnyder on a one-year contract on Monday. ESPN’s Jeff Passan first reported the deal. The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal added that it will be worth $6.25 million that includes $250,000 in incentives for 2026.

Refsnyder, 34, has been one of the best hitters in baseball when it comes to facing left-handed pitchers — slashing .312/.407/.516 with 28 doubles, 19 home runs, 77 RBI and 64 walks in those situations since 2022. Seattle becomes the latest stop on his decade-long tour across baseball, which includes stints with Boston (2022-2025), the Minnesota Twins (2021), Texas Rangers (2020), Tampa Bay Rays (2018), Toronto Blue Jays (2017) and New York Yankees (2015-17).

Nate Eaton and Romy Gonzalez — who slashed .279/.347/.326 and .331/.378/.600 against left-handed pitching in 2025, respectively — will likely be tasked with helping pick up the slack in that department in 2026.

The Mariners listed him as a “outfielder/first baseman” when announcing the deal, perhaps pointing toward their intentions with him.
