On Sunday, Dec. 28, Jaylen Brown tied Larry Bird for the most consecutive 30-point games in Boston Celtics history. Brown has scored 30 or more points in his last nine games, including a 37-point performance in the Celtics’ 114-108 loss to the Portland Trail Blazers.
When speaking to the media after the game, head coach Joe Mazzulla detailed the difficulty of Brown’s achievement. Furthermore, Mazzulla praised his All-Star forward’s ability to be an elite offensive weapon without compromising on what else he brings to the rotation.
“It’s extremely difficult,” Mazzulla said. “And not even that, it’s even harder for a guy like him to play balanced basketball and play, you know, team basketball…it’s extremely difficult to play well-balanced basketball, and I think it’s something that he does consistently for us, whether it’s his playmaking or his defense on both ends of the floor. “
During the game, Brown also moved up to 12th in the Celtics’ all-time scoring list, surpassing Bill Sharman in the process.
It’s been a stellar start to the season for Brown, who is operating in an expanded role due to Jayson Tatum’s absence through an Achilles tendon injury.

In 29 games, Brown is averaging 29.7 points, 6.3 rebounds and 4.8 assists, shooting 50.6% from the field and 37% from deep.
Now that he’s tied with Bird, Brown could surpass the Celtics legend when Boston faces the Portland Trail Blazers on Tuesday, Dec. 30. If he scores 30 or more against Will Hardy’s team, Brown will add another layer to his growing legacy with the franchise.
