The Alex Bregman sweepstakes is keeping the Hot Stove burning with several clubs in the mix, including the Boston Red Sox. However how much the Detroit Tigers are interested in the three-time All-Star isn’t so clear.
“The Toronto Blue Jays, Boston Red Sox, Chicago Cubs and Arizona Diamondbacks have been active in the Bregman sweepstakes, but the Tigers haven’t shown any new movement, a person with knowledge of the situation told the Free Press on condition of anonymity because they’re not permitted to speak publicly,” the Detroit Free Press’ Evan Petzold reports.
“The interest from the Tigers remains lukewarm, just as it has all offseason, with eight weeks until the first game of spring training,” Petzold adds.
However Detroit can’t be ruled out entirely when it comes to Bregman, according to Petzold.
“The Tigers appear to be operating in wait-and-see mode … If Bregman’s market collapses by mid-January, the Tigers could re-enter the mix by putting the only long-term offer on the table,” Petzold notes.

Keep in mind, Detroit made a push to sign Bregman last year. Petzold reports the Tigers actually put a long-term deal on the table (six years, $171.5 million) before the third baseman signed with the Red Sox, who gave him a the three-year, $120 million deal with opt outs.
Bregman to the Tigers is an interesting storyline because it would reunite the Gold Glove Award winner with AJ Hinch, his former manager on the Houston Astros.
Bregman batted .273 with 18 home runs in 2025 and drew rave reviews for his clubhouse presence as the Red Sox paraded rookie after rookie through the dugout.

But Bregman also missed two months of the season with a right quad strain. That could give the Red Sox reason to believe signing Bregman to a long-term contract doesn’t make sense.
