According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, the Chicago Cubs have acquired right-hander Edward Cabrera via trade.

“The Chicago Cubs have acquired right-hander Edward Cabrera in a trade with the Miami Marlins that sends top outfield prospect Owen Caissie and two other hitting prospects to Miami, sources tell ESPN,” Passan reported on Wednesday. “Deal is done and official. Players are being informed now.”

Cabrera had a solid 2025 MLB season for the Marlins, finishing with an 8-7 record and a 3.53 ERA across 26 starts. He set personal bests in innings pitched (137 2/3), strikeouts (150), and wins, while demonstrating better control with just 48 walks and a 1.23 WHIP. Despite a mid-season blister and a late elbow sprain that briefly sidelined him, Cabrera rebounded strongly, including a dominant outing with 10 strikeouts against the Atlanta Braves in August and a scoreless finale versus the New York Mets on September 28.

Over his career, the 27-year-old right-hander has compiled a 25-29 record with a 4.07 ERA in 89 appearances (87 starts), amassing 478 strikeouts in 431 2/3 innings since debuting with Miami in 2021. Early years were marked by injury setbacks and command struggles, but his 2025 campaign revealed excellent upside.
