After it was reported multiple times this offseason that Alex Bregman was a priority for the Boston Red Sox in free agency, the All-Star third baseman agreed to a five-year, $175 million contract with the Chicago Cubs on Saturday.

Now, the Red Sox are widely expected to continue pursuing longtime Toronto Blue Jays star shortstop Bo Bichette.

While Boston had “real disappointment” over Bregman’s departure, according to reports, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic wrote on Monday that there were some in the Red Sox organization who might have been eyeing Bichette instead of Bregman.

“Though Bregman was Boston’s main target, there were some in the organization who seemed to prefer Bichette all along,” the Red Sox beat reporter said. “Part of Boston’s hesitance to sign Bregman revolved around him turning 32 in March. Bichette, who turns 28 the same month, makes a long-term deal more palatable.”

Bregman’s stay in Boston was short, but impactful.

In addition to his 18 home runs, 62 RBIs and .273/.360/.462 slash line, the former AL MVP runner-up also played stellar defense and was a clubhouse leader.

After a down, injury-marred 2024 season, Bichette bounced back big time in 2025, recording 18 home runs, 94 RBIs, a career-high 44 doubles and a .311/.357/.483 triple slash across 582 at-bats covering 139 games.
