The Boston Red Sox lost out on third baseman Alex Bregman, so now the focus has shifted toward their backup plan.

USA Today’s Bob Nightengale claims that it will come in the form of an “aggressive pursuit” of infielder Bo Bichette. Bleacher Report’s Joel Reuter suggested making a trade for infielder Nico Hoerner. The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal sees a pivot, with his sources believing they’ll continue loading up on pitching.

Who?

Boston reportedly has members within the organization who are “high on” free-agent left-hander Ranger Suárez, according to Rosenthal.

Suárez, 30, isn’t exactly an ace, but he’s extremely consistent and boasts one of the very best postseason resume in Major League Baseball — compiling a 1.48 ERA across 42 2/3 innings, including 44 strikeouts and a record of 4-1.

Suárez has a 3.59/3.57 ERA/FIP across the last four seasons, which include 104 total starts that have seen him hit unspectacular innings totals of 150, 125, 155 and 157.

If they were to make that splash, however, it would require the organization to punt their second- and fifth-highest selections in this summer’s draft, as well as $1 million of space in next year’s bonus pool for international free agent amateurs since Suárez rejected the qualifying offer in November.

It’ll remain to be seen where the pivot… well, pivots.
