The Boston Red Sox may not be having an explosive offseason, but there are still several reasons for optimism surrounding this team heading into the 2026 season. Perhaps the biggest of the bunch is that, after making a brief debut in the majors last season, Roman Anthony appears set for superstardom with the Sox.
Anthony recently embarked on a stunning ascent to become the top prospect in baseball entering last year, and he showed what he was capable of for Boston in a quick 71 game stint (.292 BA, 8 HR, 32 RBI, .859 OPS). Long before that, though, Anthony found himself starring on a travel baseball superteam run by renowned talent evaluator Jeff Petty in 2022.
At the beginning of his aforementioned rise, Anthony found himself on a loaded team run by Petty and his Canes National program. With 32 players from Petty’s Class of 22 having already been selected in the MLB Draft, the work his program is doing when it comes to developing the next generation of baseball stars is beginning to receive serious attention.
“It’s incredibly humbling to be part of so many young players’ amateur careers,” Petty said in an interview with On Sports Illustrated. “The relationship with the player is more important than any result.
Staying in touch long after they leave, checking on them, going to see them play — that matters. We want them to know we care about them as human beings, not just as players.”

Other up-and-coming studs that featured on this team alongside Anthony were Cole Young, JR Ritchie and Sal Stewart. And considering how young this group still is, it’s fair to assume more guys will break through and find their way to the majors in the near future.
Developing young baseball players can be difficult, but Petty appears to have found something that is working with his Canes team. Anthony is just one of many success stories, and if he can put together a big 2026 season, Petty’s profile as an elite talent developer will surely continue to grow.
