Former New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady went viral during the lead-up to Super Bowl LX after being asked which team he would be siding with. Brady chose the political answer, saying he “has no dog in the fight” despite holding the Patriots franchise record for most seasons played for the team.

This sparked outrage among fans and former Patriots alike. However, unsurprisingly, Brady has one rather loud dog in his corner, ESPN analyst Stephen A. Smith.

Smith has not exactly been in the Patriots’ corner throughout the season, even guaranteeing a Seattle Seahawks Super Bowl victory when the matchup was announced. His latest comments on “First Take” are no different.

“It would’ve been nice if he sat up there — for the Patriots faithful, the organization, Mr. Kraft… it would’ve been nice for him to say, ‘I’m rooting for the Patriots,'” Smith said. “But I don’t give a damn that he didn’t!

“People are walking around acting like they should be losing sleep.”

Smith cited things like Brady’s partial ownership of the Las Vegas Raiders and the fact that Brady works for Fox while the Super Bowl is on NBC — in an argument that caused even his co-host Shae Cornette to go palms up.

“It’s not a big deal,” Smith said. “Again, it would have been nice. If it was me, of course, I would have said, ‘Hell yeah, I want the Patriots to win.’

“But people walking around acting like it’s so offensive and they’re losing sleep? Calm the hell down.”

Even if Smith is right and the stance is being overblown, it has caused a genuine rift between Patriots fans who feel slighted by his remarks. This at least legitimizes the conversation, does it not?
