Peyton Manning and Tony Dungy were once known in their professions as great winners who always fell just short of being champions. You'd think each would be grateful to the other for changing that reputation by winning Super Bowl XLI in 2007.
Dungy showed business isn't personal, though, when he reportedly told NBC analyst Dan Patrick on Sunday that he would consider trading Manning if he still ran the Colts.
That would hinge on the currently winless Colts earning the top pick in the draft, selecting Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck, Manning returning to the field healthy after neck surgery and Luck proving to be just as good as advertised.
That's a lot of "ifs," but Dungy would not be shy about playing that hand.
"If it gets to the point to where, hey, [Manning] comes back and it looks like he's going to play three or four more years, and you say, 'We've got Andrew Luck. We've got an asset, we trade [Manning]," Dungy said, according to Yahoo! Sports. "I think that asset is too much to pass up, even if your quarterback wasn't all that happy about it."
Dungy coached 22 years in the NFL, six as head coach of the Buccaneers before coaching the Colts from 2002 to 2008. His teams made the playoffs in all but two seasons.
