Entering the season, LSU wasn’t expected to contend for a National Title, but they’ve kept themselves in the conversation.
It will still take significant victories and a little help, but the Tigers aren’t dead yet.

A two-loss team rarely has a chance to make the College Football Playoff, but if things break correctly for the LSU Tigers, that’s in the realm of possibility. The Tigers suffered a Week 1 defeat at home to the Florida State Seminoles while getting their lunch money taken on October 8 when they hosted Tennessee. We’d likely have a much different conversation if the Tigers had survived their opener against the Seminoles.
It’s hard to give the Tigers too much flack for falling to Tennessee by 27 points, which raises the question of whether or not they can compete with some of the country’s top teams. With the Vols falling to Georgia, you have to wonder if LSU can keep up with a terrifying Georgia defense if they can reach the SEC Championship.
A road victory in the harsh environment of Florida stands out, even if these Gators aren’t a powerhouse. The most impressive win on LSU’s resume has to be their defeat of Ole Miss by 25 points.
The Tigers added another signature victory to their resume in Death Valley, where they stunned the Alabama Crimson Tide 32-31 in overtime. With a win over Nick Saban and Ole Miss, the LSU Tigers are creating an excellent resume, but losses to FSU and Tennessee still hurt.
It wasn’t an easy victory by any stretch of the imagination, but the Tigers took care of business when they visited Arkansas. The defenses were the story in this matchup, with the teams combining to score just 23 points.
There wasn’t a lot to see from the LSU Tigers in their beat down over UAB in Week 12, but they’ve stayed the course and have proven to be one of the top teams in the country as the season is set to come to a close.
In the Polls/CFP Rankings
Poll | This Week | Last Week |
CFP Rankings | 5 | 6 |
AP Top 25 | 6 | 6 |
Coaches Poll | 6 | 7 |
The season’s fourth College Football Playoff Rankings had the Tigers ranked as the No. 5 team in the country after being listed at six last week. Their ranking went up because Tennessee was blown out, which helped clear a path for the Tigers.
College Football National Championship Winner Odds (+4000)
At +4000 on the FanDuel Sportsbook, the LSU Tigers sit alone with the seventh-best odds to win the National Championship. This number is reasonably realistic for the Tigers, knowing they have to win out and defeat a challenging Georgia Bulldogs team in the SEC Championship.
The Remaining Schedule
Nov. 26 | at Texas A&M |
The LSU Tigers are set to close out their regular season schedule when they visit Texas A&M for a date with the Aggies. LSU has to be focused on this matchup and can’t be looking ahead to the SEC Championship against Georgia.
This Week: at Texas A&M (-9.5)
The Tigers can’t afford to look past this game on Saturday when they visit Texas A&M as 9.5-point favorites. LSU knows they have to care of business here, but it certainly won’t be an easy task.
