The shortstop, who took a Kerry Wood pitch off his right wrist in the eighth inning of Friday’s 6-2 win over Cleveland, was immediately pulled from the game and taken in for a preliminary X-ray, and according to the Boston Herald, the results were inconclusive.
The X-ray revealed a line which could be a blood vessel — the best-case scenario — or a hairline fracture, the worst-case scenario. To help determine the extent of the damage, Gonzalez will undergo further testing on Saturday.
“[The X-ray] was actually a little bit inconclusive,” Red Sox manager Terry Francona told the Herald. “I think they’re just a little more comfortable if they get some [additional tests]. We weren’t going to play him [Saturday] anyway, so we’ll get him checked a little bit further.”
Boston is certainly hoping the injury is no big deal, considering an alarming lack of depth at the middle infield positions. Nick Green has not started in over two weeks because of a nerve injury in his lower back, and Jed Lowrie has not fully recovered from left wrist surgery.
Gonzalez, obtained in August from Cincinnati, is hitting .285 with four homers and 14 RBIs in 42 games for the Red Sox.
“We’ll see [on Saturday],” Gonzalez told the Herald after Friday’s game. “They can’t tell if it’s a fracture or something else. There’s not a lot of pain. I feel good. I can move my fingers and hand and I can squeeze. It hurt a little bit [at first], but hopefully it’s nothing big and I can keep playing and help the team.”
