Bruins Hoping to Extend Winning Streak Against Visiting Panthers The Bruins welcome the Panthers to the TD Garden as they try to extend their first winning streak of the season to three. The Bruins are starting to find their game and are beginning to be rewarded for their efforts. They will try to build off that against the Panthers in another Eastern Conference tilt.

Skinny

Happy days are here again on Causeway St. as the Bruins are enjoying their first winning streak of the 2009-10 season. Their hard work, solid team defense and stellar goaltending seems to finally be paying off as they have beaten the Northeast Division leaders (Buffalo) and defending Stanley Cup champions (Pittsburgh) in consecutive games.

“That’s all you can do, just keep your head up and stick within your system,” captain Zdeno Chara said following his team’s 3-0 win over the Penguins on Tuesday. “We were playing strong defense throughout most that stretch but losing. But we stuck with it, we kept positive, kept it simple and then the offense started to come along. The last three games we really picked up that intensity and it showed.”

That win was also the team’s third shutout of the season, but even when the Bruins were being shut out or struggling to win, the goaltending and defense was there. Now it is just more evident in wins.

“We talked about this last week, where you got to stick with certain things you do well and hope to get rewarded down the road,” head coach Claude Julien said. “The one thing that was really hurting us was the fact we weren’t scoring goals because really that is putting a cloud over the fact we were still playing well defensively.”

The Panthers however, have been of the worst defensive teams in the NHL this season and have a habit of leaving their goalie out to dry.

“It’s not the goalies’ fault. You have to play better; you can’t give up free shots,” forward Michael Frolik told the media after the Panthers’ 7-4 loss to Washington Saturday.

The Panthers lost defenseman Jay Bouwmeester to free agency this past summer, and their young blue line has clearly struggled.

Outlook

The Bruins need to keep doing what they’ve been doing for over a week now and be careful not to rest on their laurels. Boston has found their balance again with the offense and special teams clicking and feeding off solid team defense and a subsequent transition game.

This could be an easy game for the Bruins to overlook with one of the worst teams in the NHL in the Panthers, but as Chara pointed out, the Bruins can’t afford to let that happen.

“Where are they and where are we in the standings?” Chara asked in a rhetoric manner, pointing out the small margin of seven points and four spots in the conference standings that can change so quickly. “Yeah, see what I mean? Things can change quickly if you don’t approach every game the same way and play with the same intensity.”

The Panthers are not one of the elite teams like the ones the Bruins have faced over the last two games, but they are scrappy and the Bruins will need to be scrappier. The Bruins finally seem to have built momentum, and now they need to ride it up the standings. In order to do so, they need another 60 minutes and a solid all-around game.
