Jonathan Papelbon, Daniel Bard, Nick Green Receive Boston BBWAA Awards The Boston chapter of the Baseball Writers Association of America named closer Jonathan Papelbon the “Red Sox Fireman of the Year,” Daniel Bard the Red Sox Rookie of the Year and awarded Nick Green the Jackie Jensen Award.

Papelbon earned his award for closing out games all year. Though his final appearance ultimately ended the Red Sox’ season, Papelbon converted 38 saves in 41 opportunies while posting a 1.85 ERA. He set the franchise record for saves — currently at 151 — and is the first pitcher to win the award four times.

Green earned his award for showing “spirit and determination,” as the honor is named after late Red Sox outfielder Jackie Jensen. Green filled in admirably wherever the Red Sox needed him in the infield, which once even meant on the mound.

Bard, 24, ranked sixth among qualifying American League relievers with 11.49 strikeouts per nine innings. He also ranked fourth among AL rookie relievers in strikeouts while posting a 3.65 ERA in 49 1/3 innings pitched.

The awards will be presented at the 71st Boston BBWAA Awards Dinner on Jan. 14. Tickets to the dinner are available. For information on tickets, call (603) 594-6427 or send e-mails to agreenwood@nashuatelegraph.com.
