Report: Mets and Yankees Downplaying Desire For Matt Holliday

Given the way things went down the last time one of Scott Boras' marquee clients hit the free agent market, it would be logical for one to expect the Yankees to be a major player in the Matt Holliday sweepstakes.

Not so, according to the Yanks.

The New York Post reports that both the Yankees and Mets are downplaying their desire to partake in the fight to sign the left-fielder.

The problem could be Boras' presentation of Hollliday as a franchise player who deserves to make as much as Mark Teixeira did last winter — and he got an eight-year, $180 million contract with New York, which many deemed to be exorbitant.

"When you have a franchise player available, that is the foundation of how you build a champion," Boras told the Post. "Because of that I expect Matt to have a very aggressive market."

Furthermore, Boras denied that Holliday is tentative about playing at Citi Field; in fact, he guaranteed Holliday would drive in 100 runs and score 100 runs at the Mets' home park.

Holliday began last season with Oakland before being traded to St. Louis prior to the 2009 deadline. He finished the year with 109 RBIs and 94 runs.
