Report: Mike Lowell's Thumb Injury Holding Up Deal With Rangers Mike Lowell may not be thumbing his way to the Lone Star State after all.

Although Lowell's surgically repaired hip isn't a concern for the Texas Rangers, the third baseman's right thumb — which was injured toward the end of the 2009 season — appears to be the only thing holding up his trade to the AL West squad in exchange for Max Ramirez, according to the Boston Globe.

The Rangers will further examine the extent of the thumb injury before agreeing to the deal, which includes Boston picking up $9 million of Lowell's $12 million salary in 2010.

“There are still things to go over,’’ Red Sox assistant general manager Ben Cherington told the Globe Saturday. “It would not be a complete surprise if it didn’t happen.’’
