No goalie has had more than three seasons with at least 40 wins.
'"It's always nice to hit it and get it over with," Brodeur told The Associated Press. "It's my own record, and I'm breaking it. It's still an accomplishment as I continue to raise the bar."
The next record within Brodeur’s reach is 600 wins. The 37-year-old is already the NHL leader for career wins and now has 597 total. He passed Patrick Roy's 551 mark last season.
This season, Brodeur also logged his 108th shutout, surpassing the former league record-holder Terry Sawchuk. Brodeur tied Roy's 13 30-victory seasons earlier this year as well, with 12 of them being consecutive campaigns.
Sawchuk, Jacques Plante and Miikka Kiprusoff have three 40-victory seasons. Bernie Parent, Ken Dryden, Ed Belfour and Evgeni Nabokov have two.
Brodeur had a three-year streak of 40-win seasons before last year when a torn bicep tendon kept him from manning the crease.
