Time is ticking down until the Red Sox Foundation’s first-ever Run to Home Base, set to take place on Sunday, May 23.
Prior to Friday’s game against Baltimore, Heidi Watney discussed the event with Red Sox Foundation executive director Meg Vaillancourt on W.B. Mason Red Sox Gameday Live.
“It’s a terrific race, and of course, it supports the Home Base program that is in partnership with Mass General Hospital,” Vaillancourt said. “It’s for our heroes — the American men and women who are serving in Iraq and Afghanistan and coming home with post-traumatic stress disorder or traumatic brain injury.”
The mission of the Run to Home Base becomes even more significant because up to 30 percent of veterans home come with one or both of these conditions.
Fans can register to run at the Home Base Web site, and they can run alone or form a team to raise money for the cause. If fans don’t want to run, they can pledge to be virtual runners and support someone else’s team.
