Mike Modano will always be remembered as a Dallas Star, but before Dallas, Modano called Detroit home.
After cutting ties with the Stars, Modano mulled moves to the Minnesota Wild, a franchise in the city where he played for four years before the Minnesota Northstars went south, and to the always-contenders San Jose Sharks.
In the end, Modano decided to return to his roots in Michigan. He confirmed on Tuesday that he will be joining the Detroit Red Wings in a one year, $1.25 million deal, according to the Dallas Morning News.
Modano was born in Livonia, Mich., and his parents still live in the area. He played some of his first big-time hockey for the Detroit Compuware in the Michigan National Hockey League in 1985.
Modano scored 1,359 points in 1,459 games for the Stars franchise.
The Red Wings, who have made the playoffs in 19 straight seasons — the longest streak in the "Big Four" sports, lost in the conference semifinals last season.
