Were You Surprised to See the Red Sox Put in a Claim for Johnny Damon? Idiot, Caveman, Judas — whatever you call him, and no matter how you feel about him, there's one thing for certain: the Red Sox want Johnny Damon back.

The Tigers left fielder was claimed on waivers by the Sox on Monday, and the teams have 48 hours to work out a deal. Damon, however, has a no-trade clause and can veto the deal should he want to remain in beautiful Detroit for the remaining of the regular season.

Many believe that the Sox front office put the claim in only to block the division-leading Rays and Yankees from picking up the former Yankees, Red Sox, A's and Royals outfielder.

This season, Damon is batting .272 with 67 RBIs in 112 games for the third-place Tigers who are 10 games out of first place heading into Tuesday's action.

The Red Sox currently have Darnell McDonald (.271 BA, eight HRs, 30 RBIs), Daniel Nava (.277 BA, HR, 17 RBIs), Bill Hall (.240 BA, 17 HRs, 40 RBIs) and Ryan Kalish (.239 BA, two HRs, eight RBIs) filling in for the injured Jacoby Ellsbury.

Are you surprised the Sox put in a claim for Damon? Text 'SOX1' to 542542 for yes or text 'SOX2' to 542542 for no.
