Jets Rally for Strong Second Half to Swat Aside Patriots, 28-14

Final, Jets 28-14: The Jets ran out the last four minutes and sealed up the victory. Each team is now 1-1. Stay with NESN.com for complete postgame coverage.

Fourth quarter, 4:06, Jets 28-14: Jason Taylor recorded his first sack as a Jet, and he forced Tom Brady to cough up the football in Jets territory. Eric Smith recovered it and gave the Jets possession at their own 41-yard line. This has not been Brady's finest half of football.

Fourth quarter, 6:09, Jets 28-14: The Jets took advantage of two passing interference penalties on Darius Butler, and Mark Sanchez hit Dustin Keller for a one-yard touchdown on third-and-goal. It was a wild throw, but Keller jumped over the back of McCourty to haul in a nice catch. The Patriots need a miracle at this point.

Fourth quarter, 11:08, Jets 21-14: It's surprising to see the New England offense struggle this badly after such a hot start. The Jets aren't generating any extra pressure or anything, but Tom Brady isn't spreading the wealth as much as he was earlier. He's forcing a lot of throws to Moss, and it's not paying off.

Fourth quarter, 13:06, Jets 21-14: Kevin Faulk took a tough hit on the right leg, and he stayed down on the sideline for a couple minutes. He hobbled off the field on his own power, and it's unclear if it was just a sharp hit to his thigh or something more serious to his knee. However, since Faulk went to the sideline and not the locker room, it's probably not overly serious.

Fourth quarter, 13:24, Jets 21-14: New England's defense held up, and the Patriots take over at their own 11 after Steve Weatherford's punt that was fair caught by Kevin Faulk. The Jets have scored on four of their eight possessions in this game, which was pretty unexpected after watching them in the preseason and Week 1.

Fourth quarter, 14:07, Jets 21-14: Nick Mangold has returned to the game. He missed the last series with a shoulder injury.

Fourth quarter, 14:54, Jets 21-14: Tom Brady's pass to Randy Moss got tipped and caught by Brodney Pool on the right sideline, but the ruling was an incompletion because Pool was out of bounds. Based on replays, Pool initially had both feet in, but he slid out before making any kind of move. The play should be upheld. (Update: Apparently, players can slide out of bounds before making a football move. It's the Jets' ball at their own 41.)

End of Third Quarter, Jets 21-14: Tom Brady has a chance to add to his fourth-quarter legacy, and he'll need to shine in the last 15 minutes to rally the Patriots from their first deficit of the season. Even with that, though, the Patriots' defense needs to earn its paycheck after struggling badly in the third quarter.

Third quarter, 0:38, Jets 21-14: Jerricho Cotchery ran a flag route out of the left slot, and he beat Devin McCourty for a two-yard touchdown on second-and-goal. That put a damper on McCourty's really good game to that point.

The Jets then successfully converted a two-point conversion due to another big play from Braylon Edwards, who reached over Darius Butler's head to snag an underthrown ball that should have been Butler's and Butler's alone.

Third quarter, 3:00, Patriots 14-13: Nick Mangold departed to the locker room with a shoulder injury, and his return is questionable. He's been replaced by Robert Turner. With Turner and Matt Slauson (left guard) in there, the Patriots need to attack the middle of New York's line.

Third quarter, 3:40, Patriots 14-13: The stadium was as loud as ever on the last series, and the Patriots failed to gain a single yard in going three-and-out. Zoltan Mesko then banged out a 56-yard punt, and the Jets have the ball at their own 30 after Jim Leonhard's seven-yard return.

Third quarter, 4:53, Patriots 14-13: Nick Folk drilled a 36-yard field goal, and the Jets have grabbed some momentum after working out of the shadow of their own end zone to rack up three points. Tom Brady and the New England offense have one heck of an important drive coming up.

Third quarter, 8:05, Patriots 14-10: The Jets took over at their own 3 after Tom Brady's errant pass for Randy Moss got intercepted by Antonio Cromartie. Then, on third-and-1, Mark Sanchez hit Dustin Keller for 39 yards, and the tight end beat Darius Butler up the left side to the Jets' 49. New York has a chance to take its first lead of the game, and this is starting to look like last year's Week 2 matchup.

Third quarter, 10:20: Patriots 14-10: The Jets have announced that Darrelle Revis is out for the game with a hamstring injury. Revis, you could say, is lost on his own island.

Third quarter, 12:41, Patriots 14-10: Darrelle Revis is nowhere to be found. The cornerback has a hamstring injury, and he never emerged from the locker room after the half.

Third quarter, 13:22, Patriots 14-10: The Jets opened the second half with a three-and-out, and Julian Edelman returned the punt to the New England 30. I've gotta say, I don't think Mark Sanchez is all that good right now, but he can still make some throws. I do believe he could be a good quarterback if the Jets gave him a better opportunity to open it up. But who knows if we'll ever see that.

Third quarter, 14:55, Patriots 14-10: Kyle Wilson returned the second-half kickoff 15 yards to the Jets' 28, and the rivalry is back on.

Halftime, Patriots 14-10: Nick Folk drilled a 49-yard field goal as time expired in the first half, and Darrelle Revis' teammates can now join him in the locker room. After getting torched by Randy Moss, Revis cried bum hammy and left with the trainers. The saga continues.

Second quarter, 0:53, Patriots 14-7: Randy Moss didn't just escape Revis Island. He bombed the damn thing into a sandbar.

Tom Brady hit Moss for a 34-yard touchdown pass into the back of the end zone, and Moss made an out-of-this-world one-handed grab with teh right hand. Moss reached out over his head and snared it with his fingertips and never even bothered to use his left hand. That's special, special stuff.

Second quarter, 5:21, 7-7: The Patriots stalled out on their third possession, and Randy Moss has missed a few questionable passes in this game. He dropped a tough one in the end zone on their first possession and made a couple of lackluster bids for two over the middle. Moss missed one of those on the last series, but it was tough to tell how close the ball actually was to Moss, who didn't even extend his hands.

After the Patriots' punt, Kyle Arrington was flagged for running into a player who called for a fair catch, and the Jets take over on their own 21.

Second quarter, 6:22, 7-7: Braylon Edwards torched Darius Butler throughout the Jets' last possession, catching three passes for 34 yards, including a 10-yard touchdown grab in the left corner of the end zone. Mark Sanchez lobbed a pass high for Edwards, who had little trouble reaching over Butler, who had his back to the pass. However, Edwards got hit for a taunting penalty after, and the Jets will kick off from the 15-yard line.

Second quarter, 11:40, Patriots 7-0: The crowd loudly rained down boos on the Jets' offense after they opened the drive with two running plays. However, after the Jets converted on third down for the second time this season, the New Meadowlands faithful loved their team again.

Second quarter, 13:09, Patriots 7-0: The Patriots have a 27-3 advantage in total offensive plays. On one hand, that's about as good as they could hope for. On the other, they still only have a seven-point lead.

Second quarter, 13:17, Patriots 7-0: Tom Brady hit Wes Welker for a six-yard touchdown pass to cap off a precise 15-play, 75-yard drive. Welker worked off Antonio Cromartie and ran an out-route to the right sideline. Brady hit Welker shy of the end zone, and the shifty receiver ducked into the corner of the end zone to cap off a second consecutive strong offensive possession.

End of first quarter, 0-0: The Patriots have a second-and-12 at the Jets' 19-yard line, and they're moving the ball with fluidity for their second consecutive possession. The Pats had the ball for all but 62 seconds, but they've really got to drive that possession edge home by scoring a touchdown. This level of lopsidedness can actually work in the Jets' favor if they escape here trailing by just three points.

First quarter, 3:37, 0-0: The Patriots' drive continues with a first-and-10 at the New York 39 after Jets safety Eric Smith took a shot at Wes Welker's head/neck on a failed third-down pass in Welker's direction. It was an easy call for the officials, who combined to throw multiple flags. Welker stayed down on the field for about 30 seconds before departing for the bench, but he's back up on the sideline.

First quarter, 6:27, 0-0: The Patriots held the Jets to three-and-out, and New England takes over at its own 25 after a 15-yard punt return from Julian Edelman. Let's see if the Jets get a little more aggressive with their blitz packages on this drive, because they're conservative defense wasn't very effective on the last possession.

First quarter, 7:05, 0-0: Tom Brady was a cool 5-of-7 for 50 yards on the opening drive, but he missed an early read to Wes Welker that might have helped convert their final third down. Instead, Brady escaped a little pressure and hit Welker a few seconds later, but the blockers were out of place at that point.

First quarter, 7:14, 0-0: Mark Sanchez's first pass sailed high and tipped off Dustin Keller's hands, and Patrick Chung intercepted it. However, the Jets challenged the play and won, so they'll keep possession. They've got a second-and-10 at their own 27.

First quarter, 7:29, 0-0: Stephen Gostkowski missed a 37-yard field goal, and the Patriots' initial drive is all for naught. Gostkowski actually hit a 32-yarder that was taken off the board due to a delay of game.

First quarter, 10:55, 0-0: The Patriots are moving down the field, and Fred Taylor just gained two yards on fourth-and-1 to get the Pats to the Jets' 35. The Jets aren't bringing much pressure, and in the two instances they have, Tom Brady quickly burnt them on an underneath throw. Darrelle Revis, by the way, has been rotating between Randy Moss and Wes Welker.

First quarter, 14:46, 0-0: The Jets only rushed four guys on the first play, and Tom Brady hit Wes Welker for an 11-yard gain. Welker was pushed out of bounds by Darrelle Revis.

4:13 p.m.: The Patriots called heads and lost the toss, and the Jets elected to kick off. It's game time, ladies and gentlemen.

4:07 p.m.: The Jets' starters are announced individually, and they run onto the field out of a tunnel filled with smoke and then between two pillars that shoot out flames and fireworks. I feel like I'm at an NBA game.

3:58 p.m.: The stadium is still less than half-full with about 15 minutes until kickoff.

3:24 p.m.: There's this really cool restaurant behind the Jets' bench on field level, and it's encased by glass doors so the patrons can get a glimpse of the action. There's also a fenced-in patio that extends toward the sideline, and people are about three deep for 40 yards. In a sea of Jets fans, I see two Tom Brady jerseys and one Randy Moss jersey.

3:18 p.m.: Don't buy your Danny Woodhead jersey just yet. He doesn't have a number listed on the Patriots' inactive list.

3:14 p.m.: Opposite of last week, the Patriots are wearing their home blues on the road. The Jets, in turn, are wearing their road whites at home.

2:55 p.m.: The Danny Woodhead story was fun to watch, but there won't be a Hollywood ending Sunday. Woodhead is among the Patriots' eight inactives, including Taylor Price, Terrence Wheatley, Dane Fletcher, Nick Kaczur, Quinn Ojinnaka, Steve Maneri and Brandon Deaderick.

9 a.m.: New venue, same hatred. The Patriots play the Jets at the New Meadowlands for the first time Sunday, and the Pats have a great opportunity to bury the hosts in an early-season hole with a victory.
