Mike Vick took a huge step toward getting his career back on track with a stellar performance as the Philadelphia Eagles’ starting quarterback on Sunday.

Plaxico Burress hopes one day to have a similar moment.

Burress, who will reach his one-year incarceration anniversary this week, is spending two years at the Oneida Correctional Facility after shooting himself in a night club and being convicted of felony firearm possession.

The star wide receiver is saddened by his inability to be there for his young son Elijah and that he missed the birth of his daughter Giovanna. Life in prison is tough, he told the New York Daily News in an interview.

“You
can’t go any lower than being here, other than being in the ground,”
Burress said. “It’s about as tough as it gets, on a personal level. You
learn a lot about yourself. You try to think about the bigger picture,
about life outside these walls. You just try to find a way to get
through.”

Still, Plax is doing his best to get by. He spends his days working as a porter and mopping floors, reading for long hours — often The Bible — and keeping himself in shape.

He works out four times each week, lifting weights, running sprints, and even completing routes and catching passes from the other high-profile inmates sequestered in protective custody.

“Everybody thinks they are Elway here,” he said.

Burress has applied for work-release, desiring to participate in gun violence prevention programs, but his applications have been denied. He will likely serve out the better part of another year behind bars, but will look to play again in 2011 — and play at a high level at that.

Football, though, isn’t what matters to him most anymore.

“Everything
you think that matters in life really doesn’t, other than your wife and
kids,” Burress said. “Everything else is secondary.”

QUOTE OF THE DAY

“One of the biggest reasons I wanted to not play (this season) was dealing with losses.”

COMMENT OF THE DAY

Sometimes, fans just need to express themselves.

I’m
sick of the the media saying athletes should apologize for some media
perceived wrong that they won’t admit happened. Guess what? Maybe it
didn’t happen? I don’t apologize for things I didn’t do just because
someone thinks it would be the best solution to right a wrong? HELLO?
INNOCENT until PROVEN GUILTY? I’d love to see the skeletons in most of
the media’s closets. Then they’d have something to really write
about!!!!!!

And why is that TEEN PALIN on DANCING WITH THE STARS? SHE IS NOT A
STAR! And don’t let her on any more talk shows. She CAN’T TALK! Only
thing she is able to say with no uncertainty is YES! YES! YES! and then
she had a baby! There have to be better ways to get ratings. Maybe OCHO
and TO dancing as a couple would do it? People would line up to see that
sweet couple! LOL”
