Nets Owner Mikhail Prokhorov Leads NBA Movement in Russia In a country where basketball is of little interest, New Jersey Nets owner Mikhail Prokhorov is attempting to generate an established following.

According to The New York Times, the Nets made a one-day pit stop in Russia, Prokhorov's home country, on Sunday and hosted an exhibition game at the CSKA Universal Sports Hall in Moscow — home of the professional basketball club formerly owned by Prokhorov.

In addition to attracting fans, Prokhorov is hoping the visit will increase the popularity of the sport. Ranking a distant third behind hockey and soccer, Prokhorov is hoping his involvement with the Nets will drive further interest for Russia's youth.

"I think for the time being, and I hope, Russia has its own team — it’s the New Jersey Nets," Prokhorov told The Times. "I hope and I’m sure that Russians will support the Nets, will watch games, visit matches in the United States and also buy some T-shirts and jerseys. And I hope that will speed up the interest for basketball in Russia."

Prokhorov is also using his influence to develop amateur leagues in his home country, backing several basketball camps and schools. The Nets will also create a direct connection with Russia, helping develop some of the country's top prospects by providing scholarship and training opportunities.

The NBA is also recognizing the untapped Russian territory, and recently opened a league office in Moscow. Moscow's professional team will be playing three NBA teams this week, taking on the Heat on Wednesday, the Thunder on Friday and the Cavaliers on Sunday.
