By now, everyone knows the story. An e-mail sent by the NHL’s senior VP of hockey operations calling Bruins center Marc Savard a “fake artist” was leaked and it’s upset some people in Boston.
There are those who are under the assumption that Campbell’s thoughts and feelings toward Savard may have played a part in Campbell’s decision not to suspend Pittsburgh’s Matt Cooke after his cheap shot on Savard last season.
The e-mails also had Campbell calling for the firing of an on-ice official who made a call against Gregory Campbell, who of course, is the son of Colin Campbell.
The reaction to the story has been as expected. There are those, especially in Boston, calling for Campbell to lose his job. That may seem unlikely, at least at this point, as the NHL has come out and stated its support for Campbell.
Perhaps most surprising was the reaction of Savard. The Bruins center insisted that the reports didn’t bother him and went out of his way to insist that he had no problem with Campbell. And not surprisingly, Campbell claimed that the controversy surrounding the whole thing was simply “much ado about nothing.”
Campbell seems like he’s not ready to back down and for the time being, it appears he has the support of the league. However, it also appears that Campbell’s detractors will not rest until he is no longer employed.
