In Postponing Eagles-Vikings Game, NFL Reminds Players That They Play for the Fans

Some people are stupid. Everyone complaining that Sunday night's game between the Eagles and Vikings should not have been postponed fits into that category.

While it's very, very true that football games have been played in much worse conditions, this game was not postponed because of field conditions. It was postponed for fan safety. If only the players could understand that.

"It's something that baffles me," Vikings tight end Visanthe Shiancoe said, according to StarTribune.com. "But I'm not here to make decisions on when games are played. But I just want to share my opinion."

The players' failure to understand the postponement is one thing, but you'd like to think the governor of the state would have a firmer grasp. Gov. Ed Rendell, however, does not.

"This is football; football's played in bad weather," he said to KYW-TV, according to USA Today. "[Vince Lombardi] would be mocking us."

What these folks — and the upset fans — aren't understanding is that the decision to postpone the game wasn't because the players couldn't handle a few snowflakes. It was decided because it would be downright irresponsible to call on 70,000 people to travel through a blizzard and then sit still for three hours as the heart of that storm passed over the city. The scene in the parking lot after the game would be a complete disaster, and there would unquestionably be several car accidents from fans just trying to get to the game.

If the league can prevent such a mess for fans, it absolutely should postpone the game. The players, after all, are there to play for the fans, and it's the fans whose best interests should always take top priority.

Now, if you want to gripe about idiotic television contracts that force this game to be played on Tuesday instead of Monday … then you've got a case.
