According to MLB.com, Gonzalez is near a seven-year, $80 million contract extension with the Colorado Rockies.
The 25-year-old, who made just $406,000 in 2010, led the National League with a .336 batting average and had 34 home runs, 117 RBIs and 26 stolen bases. He finished third in the NL MVP voting and won the Silver Slugger and Gold Glove Awards at his position.
The new deal for Gonzalez would be the Rockies’ third major contract extension this off season. In November, Troy Tulowitzki signed a seven-year, $134 million deal that will keep the shortstop in Colorado through 2020. The Rockies then inked left-handed starter, Jorge De La Rosa, to a two-year, $21.5 million extension, with an $11 million player option for 2013.
The Rockies are proving they want to reach the World Series again by opening up their checkbook to keep their young stars.
