Cam Newton's NFL Scouting Combine Performance Taking Some Heat, Quarterback 'Looks Terrible' Cam Newton raised some eyebrows when he declared that he was going to fully participate in this weekend's scouting combine. It's probably too early to say whether that decision will hurt or help the quarterback, but the initial reports don't sound good.

According to ProFootballTalk.com, a veteran NFL scout called Newton's performance on Sunday "terrible." It should be mentioned, though, that according to the report, the scout making that assessment works for a team that has no need at the quarterback position.

Newton's quarterback coach, George Whitfield Jr., admitted that Newton's performance at the combine wasn't the best showing from the former Auburn quarterback.

"It was a pop quiz, and he didn't ace it," Whitfield told USA Today. "But his final exam is in a week and a half."

That's a reference to Newton's upcoming pro day that will take place on March 8.

"He was off on some of his accuracy," Whitfield continued. "With some regularity and more work, he can correct that. … I'm just really proud of him for coming out today. He didn't score a knockout. But at least he put on the gloves.

"Some guys didn't.''

While Newton's passing performance was suspect, he did run the 40-yard dash in 4.59 seconds.
