As the trade deadline nears and it becomes increasingly clear that Carmelo Anthony will not sign an extension with any team that "rents" him, the Nuggets are becoming more and more desperate to move their star to a big-market team while they still can.

A three-team deal that would send Anthony to the Knicks, with the TImberwolves acquiring Anthony Randolph from New York and giving their first-round pick to Denver, is reportedly in the works, but the Lakers have now emerged as a dark horse to sign Anthony.

According to ESPN.com, the Lakers and Nuggets are in preliminary discussions about a potential Carmelo Anthony-Andrew Bynum swap. While the trade works financially when it only involves those two players, Denver would likely be looking to shed contracts in the process. The Nuggets, apparently, are not interested in Ron Artest or Lamar Odom.

While Anthony has not explicitly said that he would approve a trade to the Lakers, it seems unlikely that he would oppose a move to the defending champions, who just happen to play in the nation's second-largest market.

Below is a hypothetical Lakers-Nuggets deal that would allow the Nuggets to shed long-term salary for expiring contracts in addition to the Bynum-Melo swap, while also giving the Lakers a serviceable backup center in Chris Andersen, per ESPN's trade machine.
