Andrew Ference Fined $2,500 for Obscene Gesture in Montreal The NHL presumably heard Andrew Ference's excuse, but the league was not buying, as the Bruins' defenseman was fined $2,500 for his obscene gesture in Montreal on Thursday night.

The gesture in question came after Ference scored in the second period. His celebration included the raising of his middle finger as he scanned the Montreal crowd.

After the game, Ference admitted that the gesture looked intentional, but he denied raising his finger purposely.

"Coach [Claude Julien] just showed me [the video] and it looks awful," Ference said. "I just saw it and I can assure you that's not part of my repertoire. I don't know if my glove got caught up, but I can assure you that's not part of who I am or what I ever have been. It looks awful. I admit it and I completely apologize for how it looks. I was putting my fist in the air. I'm sorry, I just saw it and it does look awful. I don't know what else to say."

Ference makes $2.25 million per year, so the $2,500 hit won't likely set him back too much.

The Bruins went on to win 5-4 in overtime and will host Game 5 of their series with the Canadiens on Saturday night.
