That list of All-Star snubs in the American League could get shorter, as a pair of prominent Yankees could be skipping out on the trip to Arizona.
Future Hall of Famer Mariano Rivera is definitely out, as reported by the New York Post, as he plans to rest his sore triceps that briefly kept him out of action this week.
Alex Rodriguez, voted by the fans as the AL starter at third base, may follow his teammate's lead, as the soon-to-be 36-year-old is dealing with a pesky knee injury. Rodriguez hasn't homered since June 11, the longest drought in his career, and "it wouldn't shock anybody if Alex Rodriguez joined the Yankees closer on the sidelines for Tuesday's event in Phoenix," according to the Post.
"Alex is battling a knee issue and he is doing the best he can with what he has got," hitting coach Kevin Long told the Post.
With only one other player on the roster (Adrian Beltre) able to man the hot corner, manager Ron Washington would likely have to fill A-Rod's potential vacancy with another third baseman. Boston's Kevin Youkilis (.276 BA, 12 HRs, 58 RBIs) or Baltimore's Mark Reynolds (.230 BA, 20 HRs, 49 RBIs) would likely be at the top of that list, though Youkilis has recently said he's looking forward to the break for a chance to heal his own injuries.
