If you haven’t noticed the NFL’s increased efforts at eliminating helmet-to-helmet hits, then you haven’t been paying attention.
We’re looking at you, Dunta Robinson.
The Falcons’ cornerback was fined last year for initiating contact with his head when “tackling” DeSean Jackson last season. It was a gruesome hit and it left both players concussed, but with the speed of both players taken into account, it looked like it could have been accidental. Nevertheless, Robinson was fined $50,000 as a way to deter such hits in the future.
That fine obviously didn’t work, though, as Robinson delivered an intentional shot to the head of receiver Jeremy Maclin on Sunday night (you can give it a look in the Video of the Day section). Robinson clearly sized up Maclin before lowering his head and using the crown of his helmet to knock out Maclin. It worked, for a little while at least, but fortunately, Maclin was able to return to the game.
Clearly, a $50,000 fine isn’t going to cut it when it comes to deterring Robinson. The only option left for Roger Goodell and the NFL is a suspension, and it’d be hard to argue that Robinson hasn’t done all he can to earn one.
