Cubs Officially Announce Jed Hoyer Will Become New General ManagerThe baseball operations department that Theo Epstein now presides over has officially added a pair of familiar faces for Epstein.

The Cubs and the San Diego Padres jointly announced on Wednesday that Jed Hoyer has resigned as GM of the Padres to take the same job with the Cubs. The two clubs also announced that Jason McLeod will also leave San Diego to take over in Chicago as the executive vice president of scouting and player development.

The two teams agreed that a player to be named later will serve as the compensation for allowing Hoyer and McLeod to leave.

Hoyer and McLeod both worked under Epstein during his days as Red Sox general manager. Hoyer worked as an assistant GM under Epstein in Boston, and he worked alongside new Red Sox GM Ben Cherington as co-general managers during Epstein's brief hiatus in 2005. Hoyer took over as GM of the Padres in 2009. Meanwhile, McLeod worked as the director of amateur scouting during his time in Boston.

It is expected that Josh Byrnes will take over as general manager in San Diego. He has previously worked as the GM of the Arizona Diamondbacks after spending a few years in the Red Sox organization as well.
