"There are very good English managers out there," Gerrard said. "I don't see why we should have to look abroad if the English managers are good enough to do it, which I believe they are.
"But, for me, it's always the case of picking the best manager that can bring success for the country."
Gerrard has appeared 89 times for England since making his international debut in 2000.
England has had a foreign manager for the better part of the last decade. Sweden's Sven-Goran Eriksonn guided the team from 2000–2006. Steve Mclaren's disastrous year-long spell (2006-07) in charge saw England fail to qualify for the 2008 European championships. Current England coach Fabio Capello has been in charge since 2007 and will step down after Euro 2012.
Foreign managers have been accused of both failing to motivate and striking fear into English players. They are cited as causes for England's underachievement at major tournaments.
England fell at the World Cup quarterfinals in both 2002 and 2006. In 2004, England was eliminated at the same stage in the European championships. Germany knocked the Three Lions out of the 2010 World Cup in the round of 16.
Gerrard thinks there are plenty of English coaches that can do as well or even better than their foreign counterparts. Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp is the current peoples' choice to succeed Capello. Gerrard praised him for his work at the North London club.
"Harry Redknapp's name crops up a lot and he's done an unbelievable job. I don't think he gets the credit he deserves for what he's done at Tottenham. There's also maybe two or three other candidates along with Harry."
