Steve Gerrard to Miss Swansea Clash, England Friendlies Because of Ankle InfectionSteve Gerrard missed Saturday's win over West Brom because of an ankle infection. That ailment will keep him out of Liverpool's next game against Swansea City on Saturday and England’s upcoming friendlies, according to the club's website.

"Steven Gerrard has now undergone treatment to clear out all infection from his right ankle, which has been placed in a protective plaster cast," the statement reads. "The player will not be available for this weekend's game against Swansea City or for the upcoming England friendlies against Spain and Sweden. Steven will now continue his rehabilitation program under the guidance of the Club's medical staff."

The infection deals a blow to the Liverpool captain. He has only recently returned to action after six months out with injury. It is unknown how long it will take for him to recover from this infection.

Gerrard suffered a cut on his ankle taking in practice on Friday. It became infected the next day, causing the ankle to swell with fluid. He underwent a procedure to drain the fluid at a Liverpool hospital on Sunday and the ankle remains in a protective plaster cast.

This is the 31-year-old midfielder's second battle with infection in recent months. He underwent surgery to cure a persistent groin problem at the end of last season. An infection in the area in July kept him out of Liverpool's early games. He has made five appearances this season.
