Tony La Russa Happily Accepts Credit for Red Sox' 2004 Championship, Says He's Done ManagingThe names Curt Schilling, David Ortiz, Dave Roberts, Manny Ramirez and so many more are forever etched in Red Sox lore for their roles in the 2004 World Series title.

As far as Tony La Russa is concerned, the former Cardinals manager has earned his place in Boston sports history, too.

"The thing I would point out is — Boston had the big dream," La Russa said on The Dennis and Callahan Show on Friday morning, when discussing Boston. "For years they didn't have a World Series championship. Then in 2004, we accommodated them really nicely. So, I should be very popular in Boston."

La Russa was the manager of the 2004 Cardinals team that went 105-57 but couldn't win a game against Boston in the World Series. Despite the ever-present allure of the Boston job, La Russa insisted he's not going to manage again.

He did, however, say that the Cubs' dreams will come true under Theo Epstein.

"There's no doubt in my mind at some point they're going to win, because it's a dream that's there to be had," he said. "I think Theo and the group he's putting together, they have the opportunity and it's quite likely they'll make it happen."

La Russa was also asked about his relationship with Patriots coach Bill Belichick, who proudly sported a La Russa jersey on the day of Game 7 last week.

"I just think we love to coach, and it's one of my neatest things in my professional life is a friendship like Bill's where we can talk with each other and share stuff," La Russa, 67, said on Dennis and Callahan. "I think he's great, on and off the field. I treasure that."
